Welcome

blockofflats1.jpgLooking together at what we can learn from the way stories in the Bible snap with our own experience, and discovering what changes that might make in our lives.

Unlock is about meeting in small groups to explore the Bible together - but taking as a starting point experiences of everyday life. As people think about the stories in the Bible in the light of what happens in our own homes, in tower blocks, on our city streets, in our lives each day, the pages come to life for us, and we can imagine much better how Jesus’ disciples felt, what the situations facing the old testament characters were really like.

As we share our own stories, or think about situations in East Enders, the Bible takes on a relevance directly related to where we are. God can speak to us with new insights, and can even tell us what we should do in the circumstances we thought were impossibly difficult.

In Unlock Glasgow we are a team of three, working across Glasgow, mainly in priority areas. If you would like to start up a Bible study group, or would like support with an existing group, then we can offer a wide range of different resources - or one of us could come and join/lead your group for a few weeks.

The SBS is one of our key partners, alongside Unlock UK

Unlock Glasgow is an initiative of the Scottish Bible Society in partnership with Unlock UK and the Church of Scotland Priority Areas Group.  We are here to support the work of any church or community group in Glasgow’s Urban Priority Areas. We can provide resources, or help to lead a Bible study group, or training for group leaders.  To find out more, please contact Anne, Graham or Victoria

Bricks, building and big hearts

bricks.jpg“Bricks, building and big hearts” will be the next Unlock event which is part of our pilgrimage around Glasgow’s urban communities.  On Saturday 28th March between 2-4pm at St Gregory’s Church, Wyndford, Maryhill we will be meeting to look at Nehemiah’s story, and also at our own experiences. We may even build something together...  Do join us!

Previous events have dealt with topics like foster homes, construction sites, road safety, ginger bread biscuits and violence, to name a few!        The afternoon will be informal and open to people of all faiths or none.

Unlock Glasgow is supported by Unlock UK, the Scottish Bible Society and the Church of Scotland's Priority Areas Committee.

Retreat on the Streets 2

Retreat on the Streets 2 will take place on Thursday 7th May, meeting at the Lodging House Mission at 9.30 am.

This is another chance if you missed the October RETREAT ON THE STREETS.   A number of people expressed the hope that there would be another opportunity to take part in this urban retreat which asks the question  “Can we find God in the noise, mess and busyness of the city?”

WE HOPE IT WILL BE a way of using the city-centre as a resource for prayer and a place of encounter with God.

To help, you will be given four envelopes to open at intervals during the day – each containing a Bible story and maybe also a question.

WE INVITE YOU TO spend the day in the city with nothing to do other than be aware of what is happening around you and to reflect on the fact that the people in the city, rich and poor, are all God’s children. Spend the day alone and become aware of the vast differences in power and wealth which exist side by side in the city.

Leave your belongings behind in the Lodging House Mission - cash, credit cards, phones, books, keys. You will take with you only £1.50 that will have to last from 10.00am till 5.00pm when you will return to the LHM.  The retreat will end with some food, a hot drink, and an opportunity to share some of the day’s experiences.

WE HOPE IT WILL ACHIEVE NEW THOUGHTS:  In taking part in the Retreat, you are not pretending to be poor, but by leaving your possessions behind, you are in a symbolic way placing yourself alongside people who day by day have no money and very few choices. For a few hours at least you are attempting to walk in your neighbour’s shoes.

See the city in a different way and perhaps encounter Christ in places and people you would never have thought of looking before.

SOME COMMENTS FROM THE LAST RETREAT: “I wish it had lasted longer – the time was too short.” “I saw parts of Glasgow I had never seen before.” “It is hard to find God in the noise of the city.” “Someone left an untouched sandwich and I wondered if I could take it!” “I saw things and thought of things in a new way because of today.”
